How to create a capsule wardrobe

Want to create a capsule wardrobe but don’t know where to start?

Check out our handy guide below…

We are here to get you on your way with our easy guide on how to create a capsule wardrobe! A capsule wardrobe is a collection of selected essential items that are timeless and that you love to wear on repeat.

Are you capsule curious? Almost every time I open my cupboard and try to find something to wear I think about the fact that if I had a capsule wardrobe it would be so much easier…

So we’ve done some research into how to create a capsule wardrobe. I’m going to answer those nagging questions including where to start, what to include, what about colour? And are they as green as they seem?

What is a capsule wardrobe?

First things first, let’s start by clarifying what a capsule wardrobe actually is! It is a mini wardrobe that includes mostly very versatile pieces that you love to wear – think about the things you wash and wear, wash and wear – the ones that don’t get much cupboard time!

Where do you start?

Before you get started, have a think about the below questions:

  • Why are you doing this?
  • What are the main things you do?
  • How do you like to spend your free time?
  • What do you wear most out of what you currently have?

Some people find it useful to keep a ‘clothes diary’ for a month and see which pieces they wear the most – these are almost certainly part of your capsule.

Start with what you have…

Once you have your pile of capsule items it’s time to hit the cupboard… depending on the kind of person you are, this could be either very exciting or absolutely terrifying! This step involves sorting your clothes into four piles, including:

  • All year basics
  • Spring/summer
  • Autumn/winter
  • Donate/sell pile

You can choose to do one, all year round capsule, or seasonal capsules – up to you! Either way these piles should help.

To use colour or not to use colour, that is the question!

There is a reason that capsule wardrobes are often in neutral colours as it helps you get the most out of your clothes if they can mix and match easily. That said – there are no rules! Just make sure everything you have would be worn with more than one other thing at least. Bring it back to joy – do you love this item? Will you wear it?

What do you need?

Have a look at what you’ve got – have you covered the basics of what you wear for the activities you do? Do you have long and short sleeves, a jacket or coat, layers for warmth, jeans, active wear, skirts or dresses? Shoes, sandals… the ‘what I wear’ list will really inform this.

Sorry to say but there is no magical formula – style is so personal that a magical formula would only work for one person anyway! If it helps, lots of people have said that developing a capsule wardrobe has helped them develop their own style.

Fill those gaps…

Once you look at what you have, and how it’s all working together, you’ll be surprised how easy it is to see what you need! This is where the old ‘better quality lasts longer’ comes in – if you think a denim jacket would complete a few of your looks, then by all means, get one! See if you can find a good brand with great sustainability factors – a little desktop research will sort this one out for you.

Is a capsule wardrobe eco-friendly?

If done the way we describe above – yes, because it’s using mostly what you already have and filling gaps where there is a need. If you throw all your current clothes in the bin and buy everything new each season, then no, it is not eco-friendly!

The other factor is washing – less clothes means more washing, but if you’re taking some other sustainability steps there like re-wearing where possible, using green washing detergent, washing on eco settings (if you have them on your washing machine), and air drying where possible, that would be a big help.

In conclusion – we love capsule wardrobes! We love that the focus is on loving, and using, what you have in a way that simplifies life and helps control that ‘must shop no matter what’ mindset. So now you are all clear on how to create a capsule wardrobe, we’d love to hear how you go!
